Flood Safety Awareness Week Perfect Time to Learn, Prepare

Concord, NH – During this year's Flood Safety Awareness Week from March 10-16, the New Hampshire Department of Safety's Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) will provide preparedness information and safety tips to residents and visitors.

In 2023, 79 people in the United States died during floods, according to the National Weather Service.

Flooding has become the number one cause of disasters in the Granite State. In 2023, New Hampshire had two federally declared disasters due to damages from flooding.

Each day during Flood Safety Awareness week, HSEM, along with the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, and the Maine Emergency Management Agency, will share information on how to be prepared before, during and after a flood.

"Unfortunately, New Hampshire's communities have experienced severe flooding too often over the past year," said HSEM Director Robert Buxton. "With the proper preparation, residents and visitors can remain safe during a flood. Take time during this week to go over your family's emergency plan and update your emergency kit."
